DESCRIPTION

Detail of Apollo from a painting depicting the birth of Dionysus. The god is shown in oracular guise, holding a laurel branch and wearing a wreath of laurel. He stands beside the head of Zeus, presumably prophesying the destiny of the new-born Dionysus.
