DESCRIPTION

Detail of Apollo from a painting depicting the birth of Dionysus.

The god Apollo appears in his oracular guise, holding a staff of and crowned with a wreath of laurel. He stands behind the head of Zeus, presumably prophesying the destiny of the new-born god Dionysus.
