DESCRIPTION
Cadmus battles the guardian serpent of the sacred Ismenian spring. The beast, coiled around a pillar of the fountain-house, lunges at the hero. He wears a high-crested helm, wields a spear, and holds a shield emblazoned with a Gorgoneion (visage of a Gorgon).
