DESCRIPTION
Poseidon (Roman Neptune) drives a chariot drawn by a pair of Hippocamps (fish-tailed horses). He holds a trident in his hand and wears a billowing cloak. The god is surrounded by a variety of mythic and mundane sea creatures including fish-tailed horse, panther, bull, goat and ram. Triton, depicted as an Ichthyocentaur or marine centaur, blows a conch-shell trumpet. In the lower left-hand corner Pygmies battle cranes.
